Ten Reasons You Should Take Up the Flute
Molly Scott
The flute is a very important instrument in the woodwind family. Why, flautists might say it’s the most important musical instrument in the entire world! Highly recognizable in shape and sound, the flute just might be the key to unlocking your musical potential—especially when supplemented with lessons at the Omaha School of Music and Dance. Below, we’ve explored some reasons why the flute might be the perfect fit for you.
- You are a diva, a dramatic character!
- You enjoy being the center of attention and competition, or least, you don’t shy away from it.
- You like shiny things. All that glitters, am I right?
- The awe This classic flute excerpt inspires.
- Flutes have a funky sister instrument: the piccolo. It’s high and shrill and has lots of fun music written for it. After mastering the flute, transition to the piccolo and you will be a stand-out in any crowd!
- Marching Band! Starting as early as middle school, most school music programs include marching band during football season, with the group transforming into pep band for indoor sports. Such participation requires long hours, discipline, and sacrifice, but in return excellent music, choreographed moves, and camaraderie that is rarely found anywhere else! Even if you’re an adult starting on flute, there are community bands, marching bands, alumni bands, and more for an older student to enjoy!
- College scholarships! If you are a college-bound student and are doing really well on flute by, say, taking regular lessons at the Omaha School of Music and Dance, you could be eligible for a scholarship—even if you’re not a Music major! The requirements for such scholarships might be participation in marching band or taking studio lessons. A small price to pay, when you think of the savings in your tuition costs!
- The friends you make in band and beyond will be the kind of friends you will have for life.
- There is safety in numbers, a flute section is a tight-knit team: bands often have flute sections of at least 6 or more students. In marching band there could be as many as 30!
- If flute isn’t your main musical interest—that’s okay: the flute is a great gateway instrument into the other woodwinds like Clarinet or Oboe. You learn how to read music, measure phrases, develop strength in your diaphragm and control your air.
