We are often asked by parents who are planning to get their kids involved with learning the piano for the first time, would group piano or private piano classes be best for them? The Omaha School of Music and Dance offers both class options, but today we’d like to focus on the benefits of our Intro to Piano group class!
The Intro to Piano group class is offered on Wednesdays from 6:30 – 7:00pm and Thursdays from 5:00pm – 5:45pm.
While the benefits of a group piano class are limitless we will briefly explain how group classes cultivate social skills, offer endless performance opportunities, and facilitate the study of ensemble literature.
-
Cultivates Social Skills
The first benefit of a group class is the social aspect of the class. Being with others helps students not only learn piano, but also develop social skills. They learn patience, taking turns, how to work together as a team. They make new friends and have fun as a group. Group lessons foster a spirit of friendship, encouragement, and peer support. In addition, the joy of sharing music is experienced!
-
Endless Performance Opportunities
Another benefit of the group class is that they have the opportunity to perform in front of others each week. The studio itself only hosts a recital once a year, but with our group class students will learn performance skills as they perform their pieces each week to each other.
-
Facilitates the study of ensemble literature (i.e. duets, duos, multiple piano ensembles, etc.)
The third benefit of a group piano class is that the opportunities for learning are much wider. Group lessons combine the best of solo and ensemble playing, and the teacher has greater ability to teach the students ensemble literature such as duets, duos, multiple piano ensembles, etc. Since there are more students, the students can work together and gain skills that may not be as widely available in a private class. For example, ensemble playing, like playing in a band or orchestra, teaches the students timing is of utmost importance; that the beat is king! In a group situation, you have a ready-made ensemble without having to schedule special times for this experience.
