Beginning Ballet as a Teen

Beginning ballet as a teen, a wonderful activity at any age!

So many girls who want to try ballet think they are too old. Our teen ballet dance classes provide a solid foundation for those just starting out. The truth is, as long as you can walk, you can dance. It is true that professional ballet is very competitive, and a late beginner has a smaller chance of making it big in the ballet world, but that shouldn’t stop you from dancing!

If you are starting ballet for purely recreational activities you can look forward to many benefits! The teen ballet dance classes offer great characteristics including better posture, strengthening the body, increasing flexibility, relieving stress, fostering emotional expression and spending time with friends.

In addition, training in ballet as a teen can open doors to other styles of dance that are based on ballet technique. Studying this dance style can prepare you for success in modern, jazz, contemporary and other disciplines. Because they don’t require pointe training, these styles can be more accessible to teen beginners for potential of professional dance.

You should start taking classes once a week to begin and progress as a safe pace. However, please note that if your interest goes beyond recreational ballet, you will need to take a different approach to ballet classes.

To become a professional dancer you will be required to dance en pointe. With the proper training and conditioning, pointe is possible! Be aware that it will not be easy, and it could take years to achieve. It is safe to say that one needs to be dancing regularly at least 2-3 times a week for at least two years before starting basic pointe work. In most cases, it may take you longer than that. If you continue to train seriously, stretch and strengthen at least every other day, and educate yourself outside of your classes, there is a very good chance that you can become a successful and happy pointe dancer.

The group ballet classes at the Omaha School of Music and Dance are structured to be more recreational than professional. We offer recreational group classes for beginners and those with experience. However, we do offer private classes if you want a more challenging, professionally targeted curriculum.
