Jazz has become a very popular style of dance over the past several years, mostly because of its popularity on television shows, movies, music videos, and commercials. This type of dancing showcases a dancer’s individual style and each person interprets the moves in their own way. It takes a lot of energy with its fancy footwork, big leaps, and quick turns. Jazz is a popular class at our 144th and Dodge location. If you need to know how to get the most out of your jazz class, keep reading!
Arrive Early
It is important that you get to class 10 to 15 minutes early so that you can warm-up and stretch properly. A good jazz class explodes with energy, and you need to be ready! Isolations, turns and leaps are prevalent in jazz dancing, and in order to do these moves you need to stretch to avoid an injury. If you do suffer an injury, be sensitive to it. Don’t push yourself too hard to cause further injury or excess pain. Listen to your body. If it is telling you not to do that leap, you probably shouldn’t do it.
Avoid Big Meals Before Class
Dancing on a full stomach is not a great idea. Have a small, high-energy snack before class and save the big meal for later. Good choices before class would be yogurt, fresh fruit, dried fruit, or nuts.
Wear Comfortable Clothing & Put Your Hair Up
Make sure you are following any dress codes your studio has. Make sure your dance attire fits properly, or it will affect your dancing. Also make sure your shoes are the correct size to avoid blisters. Keeping your hair out of your eyes and face while dancing is very important so that you can see your instructor and other students in the class. A bun or ponytail make for a good solution in this situation.
Respect Your Classmates & Teachers
Everyone learns at different speeds. Know your limitations and don’t compare yourself to anyone else in the class. Ask questions if you are unsure and do your best. Listen to every correction the teacher gives, even if it isn’t directed toward you. Be appreciative of the correction because the teacher is there to help make you the best dancer you can be.
Attend Class Ready to Learn
Make a strong commitment to attend all classes and be prepared to learn when you get there. Clear your mind of all outside concerns and issues and allow dancing to de-stress you. A dancer who misses class is holding back not only themselves but also the other dancers in the class because the teacher will have to repeat the choreography for them at the next class. It is hard to progress when you are always repeating. Claim your space in the studio that will give you plenty of space to move and stretch. The front row is the best spot because you will be able to see and hear the instructor perfectly.
